The Pic du Midi de Bigorre

This is one of the most majestic summits of the Hautes-Pyrénées of 2.877m. Accessible to every public, the Pic du Midi is renamed for the beauty of its landscape, it is also famous for its astronomical observatory.

To reach the summit of the Pic du Midi, let yourself simply carry on a splendid ascent. All year round, at La Mongie, ski resort of the Domaine of Tourmalet and cross 1000m elevation in 15min thanks to the cable car. The cable car is situated 25min from the Carré Py’ Hôtel***.

Air and light, purity and transparency are the secret of this site, for a long time reserved for the scientists. The panoramic terraces were built on 750 m². The lookout is of 300km of summits of the Pyrenees, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to the splendor of the landscape, the Pic du Midi is being listed as a national natural site since 2003.

Lourdes

Cosmopolitan and friendly, Lourdes receives every year 6 million travelers from over 140 countries, from all continents, to share stories, meetings or emotions. Place of fraternity and spirituality, this city is also a natural paradise, the starting point for many walks. Lourdes is 20min from the Carré Py’ Hotel***.

It is on the banks of the Gave de Pau (name given to the Pyrenean torrents), in the cave of Massabielle, that the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, changing forever the destiny of Lourdes.

The area of ​​the Cave, also known as the Sanctuary Notre-Dame of Lourdes, is a private area of ​​52 hectares. It is open every day of the year, 24 hours a day. Spiritual retreat where to draw strengths, back to basics, feel the fervor and live moments of spiritual gatherings, you should go to Lourdes for living this experience.

Overlooking the city, the Jer Peak offers a unique viewpoint with astonishing view to 360° view on the city, the valley of Argeles-Gazost and the Pyrenean summits. It is by a hundred-year-old funicular and full of charm, that we go to the top.

 


The Spanish bridge

Prepare to live through emotions that only nature can arouse. Near Cauterets in the Hautes-Pyrénées, le Pont d’Espagne and its waterfalls contain all the strength and romanticism of the Pyrenean mountains. This exceptional site is, moreover, one of the most accessible in the Pyrenees National Park. In summer as in winter, meditation, walking and hiking, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing or tobogganing will delight young and old alike. To make it accessible to all, this site was laid out to respect the environment: car park, reception building, shuttles, hostels, etc.

A marked path will take you to a footbridge, where you can admire the famous Pont d’Espagne, arched above gorges where foaming torrents flow. You may then take the Gaube chair lift that will take you quietly to the lake.

During a short 15-minute walk on the level, you will see the lake appear in all the splendour of its crystalline waters.


Cirque de Gavarnie

Grandiose! How else to describe “le Cirque de Gavarnie”? The great Pyrenean limestone cirques owe their existence to the work of immense glaciers now disappeared. Gavarnie (1h45 from the hotel), in the “Hautes-Pyrénées”, is the most famous of them.

First, imagine the scene … You are in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park. There, straddling the Spanish-French border, stands the Mont Perdu which exceeds 3000 m.

Since 1997, this collection of over 30 000 hectares is a World Heritage by UNESCO, both for its natural and cultural richness. Only 27 sites in the world have to date of such recognition.

Access to Gavarnie is simple. Arriving at the village, you are facing the wall, and 1h30 of easy walking, you find yourself at the foot of circus where stands the old inn. The walk is on foot or horseback: it gives the appearance of Gavarnie a truly theatrical dimension.


Via Ferrata Vertige de l'AdourViaferrata Vertige de l’Adour

“Vertige de l’adour” is a ropes course nestled at the foot of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (Artigues is 20 minutes from the hotel) in a chasm of the Adour. It includes various activities: monkey bridges, footbridges, swings … interspersed with portions “via ferrata”.

All the route is set and secure, which allows everyone, according to his pace, his desire and ability to live an adventure in nature.

Similar to a “accrobranche” by workshops, it is a “accroroches” by young visitors!


The Medous Caves

Just a few hundred yards of the Carré Py’ Hôtel***, the Medous Caves are divided into two parts: a lower gallery called “Gallery Maker” and a higher “Hall of Wonders”.

The rich concretions, the beauty of the underground river, the structure of the cave, the exceptional location the entrance enjoying a framework and a single access facility are all elements that ensure a tourist value of the highest order. Throughout the course, you can discover the most diverse concretions: stalactites, stalagmites, Eccentrics, Columns and petrified waterfalls.


The Pit of EsparrosGouffre d'Esparros

To visit the Pit of Esparros (40 minutes of the hotel) it is to roam within a real mineral garden.
We discover alternately in vast carved and sculpted by water galleries: concretions and rare and exceptional crystals especially aragonite and calcite flowers, records, and columns, eccentric and large draperies. We must appreciate the beauty of aragonite crystals and delicate, dream in the beautiful Lake Hall, the thousands of concretions, imagine the first adventurers down the wells that had once up to head back to the light.


Abbaye de l'EscaladieuThe Abbey of Escaladieu

The Abbey of Escaladieu is located in a wooded valley of Baronnies near two spa towns Capvern and Bagnères de Bigorre (20min of the Carré Py’ Hôtel***).

Daughter of the Cistercian Abbey of Morimond, the Abbey of Escaladieu was founded around 1140 at the confluence of the Arros and the Luz.

The architecture of Escaladieu is in perfect accordance with the rules of the order: simplicity and sobriety.

The magic of the place and the purity of the architecture are an invitation to serenity and travel.


Castle of MauvezinChâteau de Mauvezin

The Castle of Mauvezin is a medieval castle (20min from the Carré Py Hotel***). The castle was built in the eleventh century by the Counts of Bigorre. It was rebuilt by Gaston Phoebus by 1380. The castle is fully restored. Two videos rooms present the story of the castle and the restorations. In the donjon, six rooms show scenes from daily life in the Middle Ages. The castle is open for free visits every day and all year long. Guided tours are proposed daily in July and August and all year by appointment for groups. Shows are organized every Sunday in July and August.

Vertige de l’Adour is an acrobatic course nested next to the Pic du Midi de Bigorre in a canyon of the Adour. It includes various obstacles courses: monkey bridges, footbridges, swings … interrupted with portions “via ferrata”.
All the route is fitted out and secured, which allows everyone, according to the rhythm, the desire and the capacities, to live an adventure in nature.
Similar to tree climbing, it is a “rock climbing” according to young visitors!
